Mapping Manchester, Route 2

This morning I went out and took my second lot of photos along a pre planned route of manchester. I did the same as I had done the morning before and just took photos as I walked along the streets. I intend to do one more route on saturday morning and then play about with the photos I have taken both on photoshop and possibly even creating texture or collages with them. Getting up for 5 is not easy.

Thought of the Day

If the world did end tomorrow, there would still be a Cafe Nero on every street corner.

Lauren Bowker

Lauren Bowker is a former Textiles student that studied at Manchester Met and has now gone on to create a lot of inspiring designs and been involved in some really amazing projects. I thought it was really inspiring and quite scary to see how much she had accomplished in such a short time.

Corridor Manchester

Last week we had a talk from Corridor Manchester. The Corridor is a foundation that aims to bring in more economic growth for Manchester by linking together the universities, city council and NHS university hospitals. The Corridor is also starting a regeneration program that should be completed in 2020, this regeneration is also part of the aim to increase the economic growth of the city.

  • Today the Corridor generates £3.2 billion, 25% of the city’s GVA.
  • 55 000 people work on the Corridor, 12 % of the city’s workforce.
  • 43% of the activity is in knowledge intensive sectors, significantly higher than the national (22%) and regional (21%) averages.

Cornerhouse Talk

I went to a talk on the corner house that explained to me what it is that the building does for the city, I had initially thought that the building was just a cinema that showed mainly independent and foreign films. However from this talk i also discovered that the Cornerhouse also has 3 Galleries inside (which i have since been to visit) and that it sells a large collection of artists books.
We were also told while at this talk about the developments that would be going on for the cornerhouse in the future. The building is merging with the Library Theatre Company in order to create a new home for them which shall also include a theatre. The project intends to be completed by 2014 and it shall see the cornerhouse move away from oxford road and down behind hotspur house.

Did You Know

We were shown this video within the first lecture that introduced Unit X to us. The facts and figures within the video are quite overwhelming and even at some times scary. The video described the way in which the population of the world will boom and that in 2050 80% of the worlds population will be living within cities. It was this thought that made me think about a world without people. What if these facts and figures were all just wrong? What if the worlds population disappeared?
